How to get a Small Business Loan

by on August 23, 2010

Small business loans are available through many, various entities.  Federal and state governments as well as private lending institutions, such as banks and credit unions have loan programs designed to assist individuals starting and expanding a company.

Some of the loan programs offered by the government to small businesses for start up or expansion are: 7(a) Small Business Loan, Business Physical Disaster Loan, Business and Industrial Loan, Certified Development Company (504) Loan Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan among others.  The list of possible loans is available on various government benefit websites.  Questionnaires are provided in order to determine one’s eligibility for a particular loan.

Banks and lending institutions offer a wide variety of small business loans.  The various types of loans are designed to meet the specific needs of the company.  A few of these more specific loans are working capital loan, business credit loan, business equity loan, inventory financing loan, purchase order financing loan and others.  These loan types tend to be business specific and may not apply to your type of business.  For instance a “Retail Merchant Cash Advance Loan” is a loan specific to a company that receives credit card payment for goods or services.  If you start a business with no plans of credit card transactions this type of loan would not apply to you.  Types of business loans number in the hundreds.  Hiring a professional to sift through the maze of loans right for your business would be well advised.

As you search out lending institutions to provide you with business capital, be sure to have a well prepared, detailed business plan ready.  Lenders will evaluate all facets of your new business, including personnel they are dealing with, in order to determine their willingness to invest in your business.  Contacting a potential lender to find out what they will need from you could save much time and aggravation.
